Description

Essential Mint is a seven-ingredient, fluoride-free natural toothpaste built around what the mouth actually needs: a gentle polish, a balanced oral environment, and a smooth finish that does not strip.

There is no foam here. No SLS, no gentler-sounding surfactant substitute, no water, no preservative system, and no filler hiding behind mint. Just a concentrated oil-based paste that feels clean because the formula is doing the work.

Directions

Brush thoroughly twice a day or as directed by a dentist or physician.

Uses: Helps moisturize gums, reduce plaque and tartar buildup, remove surface stains, and freshen breath with regular brushing.

Ingredients

  1. Organic xylitol
  2. Organic cold-pressed castor oil (Ricinus Communis Seed Oil)
  3. Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)
  4. Hydrogenated coconut oil
  5. Organic peppermint essential oil (Mentha Piperita Oil)
  6. Organic spearmint essential oil (Mentha Viridis Leaf Oil)
  7. Organic tea tree essential oil (Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil)

How It Works

Cleaning does not depend on foam. Baking soda neutralizes acids and polishes gently without wearing enamel down, while xylitol disrupts the bacteria behind decay and keeps the mouth in balance.

Cold-pressed castor oil builds the paste without water, so the formula needs no preservatives. Coconut oil adds a smooth, creamy feel and naturally occurring lauric acid, leaving the mouth conditioned rather than stripped.

Peppermint and spearmint give a real, authentic mint flavor, and tea tree adds a soothing antimicrobial note. There is no foam, because foam was never what cleaned your teeth.

Ingredients

  • Xylitol & Baking Soda

    THE ACTIVES

    Xylitol & Baking Soda

Organic xylitol helps support a healthy oral microbiome by selectively disrupting harmful bacteria while also giving the formula a clean and balanced profile on the palate. Our xylitol is sourced from organic, non-GMO corn cobs, a sustainable alternative to birch trees. Baking soda both neutralizes acids and provides gentle abrasion, polishing enamel without wearing it down.

  • Castor & Coconut Oil

    THE BASE

    Castor & Coconut Oil

Organic cold-pressed castor oil creates a rich, paste-like base without the need for water, allowing our formula to remain preservative free. Coconut oil lends a smooth, creamy feel and contributes naturally occurring lauric acid, a fatty acid long valued for its gentle antimicrobial properties. Alongside the ricinoleic acid in castor oil, these fatty acids help support a balanced oral microbiome. Our coconut oil is fully hydrogenated, trans fat free, and sourced from expeller-pressed coconut oil.

  • Peppermint, Spearmint & Tea Tree

    THE FINISH

    Peppermint, Spearmint & Tea Tree

Organic peppermint and spearmint essential oil provide a mint flavor that is real and authentic. Organic tea tree essential oil has both antimicrobial and soothing properties that support a clean and healthy smile.

The Formula

Soap Belongs On Skin. Not In Your Mouth.

We chose to create a formula that appeals to your biology, not your psychology.

Most toothpastes get their foam from surfactants, ingredients commonly used to help lift oils and residue in products like shampoo, soap, and dish detergent. But in the mouth, they can disrupt delicate cell membranes, affecting everything from oral bacteria to gum tissue.

Foam is largely about perception, not performance. Legacy toothpaste brands have trained us to associate foam with “clean” even though more foam does not necessarily mean better cleaning. Many natural brands follow the same playbook, simply replacing familiar surfactants like SLS with gentler-sounding alternatives you may not recognize.

What We Leave Out.

  • No Fluoride.A fluoride-free formula for those who avoid harsh chemicals. If you are cavity-prone or under dental treatment, consider following your dentist's guidance.
  • No Surfactants. No SLS. No "natural" synthetic foaming substitute. Soap belongs on skin — not in your mouth.
  • No Preservatives. With a water activity that is near zero, our paste does not require preservatives to prevent microbial growth.
  • No Filler.Nothing unnecessary. No water, aloe vera, glycerin, sorbitol, hydrated silica, cellulose gum, carrageenan, or xanthan gum.
  • No Harsh Abrasives.Baking soda has the lowest abrasivity of commonly used toothpaste abrasives. No hydrated silica, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, calcium pyrophosphate, alumina, or sodium metaphosphate.

Our Story

Athena Naturals starts with Dr. Jade K. Kim.

Like many dentists, she had been trained to judge toothpaste by a familiar set of questions: does it contain fluoride, is it gentle on enamel, and will patients use it consistently? That was the framework she followed for almost twenty years. But as more patients began asking for a fluoride-free option, a bigger question followed: what else are we putting in our mouths every day, and why?

When she looked closely, she was alarmed. Much of the category seemed built around ingredients she did not feel were necessary: synthetic fillers, harsh abrasives, surfactants, strong flavor systems, and preservatives. She turned to natural brands hoping for something better. The “SLS-free” and “paraben-free” claims sounded promising, but the ingredient lists often told another story. Instead of water, some used aloe vera juice, which is mostly water and still requires preservation. Instead of SLS, many used another surfactant under a less familiar name. And some swapped traditional abrasives for clay that raised separate concerns around contamination.

She no longer knew what to recommend. So she decided to make her own. With help from her son, a biophysics graduate, she set out to build a formula that was simple, stable, and above all safe. After months of work and many rounds of testing, they arrived at one her patients loved, and that she could finally stand behind.

Questions

Honest answers, before you switch.

  • Is a fluoride-free toothpaste right for me?

Essential Mint is built for adults who prefer daily care without fluoride. If you are cavity-prone or under active dental treatment, follow your dentist’s guidance on whether a fluoride paste is the better fit for you.

  • It doesn’t foam. Does it actually clean?

Most toothpaste foams because you are more likely to buy it if it does. Foam is for your psychology, not your biology. There is little to no evidence that surfactants benefit your oral hygiene; if anything, they may irritate your gums.

  • Why no preservatives?

Water is a filler that makes toothpaste vulnerable to microbial colonization. A preservative system is required to ensure patient safety, which can come at a cost for sensitive individuals. Without water, our formula is not vulnerable to spoilage and does not need any harsh preservatives.

  • What does “moisturizing” mean for toothpaste?

This is a toothpaste that is not drying and won’t impede salivary flow. Saliva is crucial for oral health, and castor and coconut oil help seal in that moisture, leaving your mouth feeling smooth rather than stripped.

  • How long does one tube last?

A 100 ml tube lasts roughly two to three months of twice-daily brushing for one person, using a pea-sized amount each time.
