Inside our seven-ingredient formula

Essential Mint contains seven ingredients: xylitol, castor oil, baking soda, hydrogenated coconut oil, peppermint oil, spearmint oil and tea tree oil. This page explains their formulation roles and the finished-product data Athena has published. A short list is an attribute, not proof that the paste prevents disease or is universally better.

This list follows the current Athena Naturals ingredient declaration. Ingredient order, INCI names, supplier descriptions and organic designations should always be checked against the production label and formula specification when either changes.

Xylitol and baking soda

Xylitol supplies sweetness without conventional sugar and contributes solid material to the paste. Research on xylitol in gum, lozenges or other delivery formats does not automatically establish a clinical outcome for the amount and contact time in this finished toothpaste. The xylitol evidence review keeps those study designs separate.

Baking soda is the principal polishing and abrasive component. Ingredient-level literature can describe sodium bicarbonate systems, but the abrasivity of Essential Mint belongs to the finished formula. Athena should not publish an RDA number or “low-abrasive” claim until a current product-specific test supports it. See what RDA can and cannot measure.

Castor oil and hydrogenated coconut oil

Cold-pressed castor oil is the liquid carrier that gives the paste much of its body and flow. Hydrogenated coconut oil adds structure and helps the formula hold a paste-like consistency. Together they create an oil-based, no-added-water system that softens during brushing.

Those are formulation roles. They do not establish that the oils treat inflammation, alter saliva, remove toxins or prevent disease. Oil-based toothpaste is also not the same intervention as oil pulling, so studies of one should not be used as evidence for the other.

Peppermint, spearmint and tea tree oils

Peppermint and spearmint oils create the mint profile. Tea tree oil contributes to the aromatic finish. The botanical names connect the familiar terms to the label declaration; they do not turn flavor ingredients into active drugs.

Essential oils can also be allergens or irritants for some people. The ADA identifies flavorings, including mint-derived ingredients, among reported causes of toothpaste contact reactions.1 Do not use undiluted essential oils as a substitute for a formulated product, and stop using a paste if swelling, persistent burning or another concerning reaction occurs.

What the formula leaves out

The current formula contains no fluoride, surfactant, added water or added preservative. Those are verifiable composition statements. They do not mean that fluoride is unsafe, that all surfactants are harmful or that every preservative is unnecessary.

The absence of fluoride means Essential Mint should not claim to prevent cavities. The absence of surfactants explains why it produces little to no foam, not why it is medically better. The no-added-water structure changes the preservation strategy, but safety still needs finished-product evidence.

What has been tested

For the sample reported in June 2026, MCL Food Testing measured water activity of 0.352. Aerobic count, yeast, mold and Enterobacteriaceae were each reported below 10 colony-forming units per gram. Those results support that the tested sample was strongly growth-limiting without an added preservative.2

Athena also publishes an elemental panel for lot 001.3 Both reports are snapshots tied to the submitted sample and methods. Neither establishes sterility, every future lot, long-term stability, abrasivity or a clinical oral-health effect. FDA guidance places responsibility for adequate safety substantiation on the manufacturer and recognizes that finished-product testing may be needed.4

What seven ingredients does and does not mean

Seven ingredients makes the formula easier to audit and explain. It does not mean every longer formula contains unnecessary ingredients. Water-based pastes may need humectants, binders and preservatives; active toothpastes may need ingredients that stabilize and deliver the active.

Safety and performance depend on identities, amounts, purity, interactions, manufacturing, packaging and intended use. The FDA is explicit that natural or organic source does not guarantee cosmetic safety.5 Simplicity is a design choice, not a clinical endpoint.

Limitations and evidence still needed

No product-specific RDA result, long-term stability report or randomized clinical performance trial is presented here. Until those data exist and are reviewed, this page should not make comparative abrasivity, shelf-life or disease claims.

The formula and testing statements also depend on current production records. A label, supplier or process change can make old wording obsolete, which is why the ingredient declaration and linked reports need human quality review at publication and whenever the formula changes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the seven ingredients in Essential Mint?

The current formula lists xylitol, cold-pressed castor oil, baking soda, hydrogenated coconut oil, peppermint oil, spearmint oil and tea tree oil. The production label remains the controlling source if the formula changes.

Does Essential Mint contain fluoride?

No. Fluoride-free is a composition statement, not an anticavity claim and not evidence that fluoride is unsafe. The ADA recommends fluoride toothpaste for most people, especially when cavity risk is a concern.

Why does Essential Mint not foam?

The current formula contains no surfactant. Surfactants are the ingredients that normally stabilize toothpaste foam, so Essential Mint produces little to no lather. That sensory difference is not proof of clinical superiority.

How is a no-added-water toothpaste evaluated for microbial stability?

Water activity and microbiological counts can help assess whether a finished product supports growth. One reported Essential Mint sample measured water activity of 0.352, with aerobic count, yeast, mold and Enterobacteriaceae each below 10 CFU per gram. The report is a snapshot, not proof of sterility or every future lot.

Is a seven-ingredient toothpaste automatically safer?

No. A short list is easier to read, but safety depends on the identity, amount, purity and interaction of ingredients, manufacturing, packaging and intended use. Natural origin and ingredient count do not establish safety by themselves.
