SLS-free vs. surfactant-free toothpaste

“SLS-free” means sodium lauryl sulfate is absent. “Surfactant-free” means the formula is made without the broader ingredient category. An SLS-free toothpaste may still foam because another surfactant replaced it, and neither label proves that a product is safer or better for every mouth.

What SLS is

Sodium lauryl sulfate is an anionic surfactant. One end of the molecule interacts with water and the other with oils, allowing the formula to wet surfaces, disperse oily material and stabilize foam. It is also called sodium dodecyl sulfate in scientific literature.

In toothpaste, SLS is an inactive formulation ingredient rather than the anticavity active. The ADA lists SLS and sodium N-lauroyl sarcosinate as detergents used for foaming action that may help solubilize plaque and accretions during brushing.1

Why the two labels are not interchangeable

An SLS-free formula can use cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, glucosides or another surfactant. That may be a reasonable formulation choice. It also means the product is not surfactant-free.

A surfactant-free claim says no ingredient from that functional category was intentionally used. Because ingredient names do not always announce their function, consumers may need to ask the manufacturer directly. What the tolerance evidence supports

A 2022 scoping review mapped reports of mucosal desquamation, irritation, inflammation and ulcer-related outcomes with SLS toothpastes. Its clinically useful conclusion was cautious: evidence that SLS-free toothpaste may reduce the number, duration or pain of recurrent aphthous ulcers was limited, and more research was needed.2

A separate systematic review focused on recurrent aphthous stomatitis rather than the general population.3 That boundary matters. Evidence in people with a recurring ulcer condition does not establish that SLS is unsafe for everyone or that every unexplained oral symptom is caused by a surfactant.

What the performance evidence supports

In one eight-week randomized trial, the tested non-SLS and SLS formulas had no statistically significant difference in plaque, gingival bleeding or gingival abrasion. Participants preferred the SLS product’s foam, taste and freshness.4

The non-SLS toothpaste in that study was not surfactant-free. It used a different surfactant. The trial therefore supports the idea that SLS is not required for those measured outcomes in that comparison; it does not answer whether every fully surfactant-free paste performs the same.

Plant-derived does not settle mildness

A surfactant can begin with coconut, palm or another plant feedstock and still behave as a surfactant. Origin and function are separate facts. The FDA warns that natural or organic origin does not determine cosmetic safety.5

Likewise, a chemical-sounding name is not evidence of harm. Concentration, charge, purity, co-formulation, contact time and individual susceptibility all matter. Compare the actual ingredient and finished formula rather than the story implied by its source.

A practical label-reading checklist

Limitations and evidence quality

The SLS literature includes small experiments, short clinical trials and studies in people with recurrent ulcers. Formulas differ in flavor, abrasives, fluoride and replacement surfactants, making it difficult to assign every difference to SLS alone.

There is even less comparative clinical research on formulas with no surfactant at all. The supportable distinction is linguistic and compositional: SLS-free and surfactant-free are not synonyms. A claim of better health outcomes would need its own evidence.

Is SLS-free toothpaste surfactant-free?

Not necessarily. SLS-free means sodium lauryl sulfate is absent. The formula may use another surfactant to spread, disperse material and create foam. Check the complete ingredient list or ask the manufacturer.

What ingredients can replace SLS in toothpaste?

Examples include cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate and some glucosides. This is not an exhaustive list, and an unfamiliar ingredient should not be classified from its name alone.

Is SLS unsafe in toothpaste?

Routine use is not established to be unsafe for everyone. Research reports oral irritation and ulcer-related outcomes in some contexts, and limited evidence suggests some people with recurrent aphthous ulcers may prefer SLS-free formulas. The evidence is condition-specific.

Does surfactant-free toothpaste clean teeth?

Brushing supplies the mechanical plaque-disrupting action, so visible foam is not required. Whether a specific surfactant-free product delivers a specific clinical outcome must be evaluated for that finished formula and outcome.

Is a plant-derived surfactant automatically gentler?

No. Source does not determine safety or mildness. Concentration, molecular properties, purity, the rest of the formula, exposure and individual susceptibility all affect tolerance.
